LAST TIME OUT: Gonzaga split during its weekend games at Oregon State and Eastern Washington to improve to 2-3-0 on the season. On Friday, Gonzaga had a chance to go up when Katie Carpenter was awarded a penalty kick with under fifteen minutes remaining. Oregon State's goaltender made a save on the attempt to keep the game scoreless. OSU would get the game-winner with under four minutes remaining to garner a 1-0 victory. On Sunday, Gonzaga scored four first half goals en route to a 5-0 victory over the Eagles. Walker Loseno picked up a pair of goals to lead the GU attack while Tara Curtis and Gina Legaz combined for the Bulldogs second shutout of the season. VS. IDAHO STATE: This will be the first meeting between Gonzaga and Idaho State. The Bengals come into the game following a 1-1 weekend in Illinois against Eastern Illinois and Western Illinois. When Gonzaga travels to Pocatello on Friday, it will be the sixth home game of the season for Idaho State. They are currently 3-0-1 at home with a mid-week game against Weber State before the Zags come to town. The Bengals have four players with seven or more points led by senior Jill Schade (10 pts., 2 goals, 6 asts.). VS. BOISE STATE: This will be the second meeting between Gonzaga and Boise State with Gonzaga holding a 1-0-0 series lead after defeating the Broncos 3-1 at home last season. In that game Sara Streufert tallied two goals and Jenny Harvey added another for Gonzaga. This season Boise State is 1-2-1 with one loss coming in double-overtime against Wyoming in the Hawaii Outrigger Hotel Classic. BSU opens its home season on Friday against Nevada-Las Vegas before entertaining GU on Sunday afternoon. COACH STILES RETURNS FOR SECOND SEASON: Gonzaga head coach Shannon Stiles is in the middle of her second season guiding the Bulldogs soccer program. Her career record of 9-16-0 is second all-time at Gonzaga. Stiles needs just one more conference victory and six overall wins to become the school's leader in both categories. In her rookie campaign, Stiles coached the Bulldogs to their second most successful season in school history with a 7-13-0 record. Although the Zags finished 1-6 in the West Coast Conference, it marked only the second time the team had won a WCC game and first time Gonzaga had not finished last in the WCC. LOSENO LETS LOOSE: Freshman Walker Loseno netted her second two goal game of her young career during Gonzaga's 5-0 victory over Eastern Washington on Sunday. The freshman from Renton, WA, also collected two goals last weekend as Gonzaga blanked Whitman, 10-0. For the season Loseno leads the team with four goals scored and is second on the team with eight points. Senior Sara Streufert is the only other Gonzaga player to have a multiple goal game this season with two goals against Whitman. ALL OR NOTHING: All or nothing seems to be the Gonzaga theme for the season as the Bulldogs have been part of five shutouts in their five games for the season. In GU's two victories this season they have shutout Whitman and Eastern Washington. During the three losses the Bulldogs have been on the other end of the table being shutout by Montana, Portland and Oregon State. STREUFERT MOVES CLOSER TO WCC RECORD BOOK: With her three-point weekend, senior Sara Streufert moved closer to the 100-point plateau that would make her only the 10th player in West Coast Conference history with 100 or more points. Streufert's career total now stands at 80 points. With her goal on Sunday, Streufert did move into the WCC top ten in goals scored. She now stands at 34 goals scored which ranks the Spokane native in 10th place just three goals behind former Portland player Justi Baumgardt (37 goals / 1993, 1995-97). AN ASSIST OR TWO: With her two assists on Sunday afternoon, Megan Black became the second Gonzaga player with a two assist game for 2000. Black set up the Bulldogs first two goals against EWU, scored by Walker Loseno and Sara Streufert. Black now joins Streufert in the two assist game column. Streufert had two assists last weekend against Whitman. SPLIT SHUTOUT: Freshman Tara Curtis and senior Gina Legaz combined once again for Gonzaga's second shutout of the season. The duo turned away seven Eastern Washington shots on goal to preserve the shutout victory. Five games into the 2000 season, Gonzaga has now matched last season's shutout total of two and is halfway towards breaking the school record of four shutouts set in 1997 when Gonzaga posted a 8-12-0 record. For Legaz the combined shutout now gives the senior 4.5 career shutouts which is tops in the Bulldogs career record book. With the combined effort both goalkeepers now have one shutout for the season which ranks them in a tie for third place in the Gonzaga single-season record book. The single-season leader is Sara Kinsky with three coming during the 1997 campaign.
MOVE TO THE HEAD OF THE GOAL: Gonzaga scored three goals on headers Sunday during the Zags victory over Eastern Washington. Sara Streufert headed home the second Gonzaga goal off an assist from Megan Black. Katie Carpenter then collected the second GU header goal off a pass from Ashley Lucey. The final header goal of the game came midway through the final half as Katie O'Brien scored her first collegiate goal off on a header, assisted by Sara Streufert.
