Matt Santangelo's Collegiate Career

FRESHMAN (1995-96) : Redshirted at Gonzaga University.

FRESHMAN (1996-97): Started 25-of-27 games, not getting start early in the season against Central Washington and in home finale against San Diego for Senior Night...broke out of early-season slump with 12-for-25 effort in Bank One-Foothills Dodge Ram Classic hosted by Colorado State University...blossomed into one of the best point guards in the West Coast Conference, averaging 13.2 ppg, 2.9 rpg and 4.4 assists while surrendering just 2.9 turnovers per game...had one four-game stretch where he had just one turnover a game, and had 14 games of two or less turnovers...season-high 9 assists against Montana State...scored in double figures 22 times, including 17 of last 18 games regular-season games, with a career-high 28 points at Saint Mary's on final weekend of regular season, one of three games with 20 or more points...ranked 11th in WCC scoring (13.2 ppg), 4th in 3-point percentage (42.3) and tied for 4th in assists (4.4/gm)...WCC Co-Freshman of the Year with Brian Jones of Santa Clara, and earned honorable mention All-WCC recognition.

SOPHOMORE (1998-99): Picked up where he left off as a freshman, starting all 34 games while averaging team-high 33.2 minutes per game…140 assists for the season moved him into fifth on the Gonzaga single-season list, moving ahead of John Stockton who had 135 as a sophomore in 1982…career-high 10 assists at home against Saint Mary's, and had six other games of 6 or more…with Quentin Hall coming off the bench at point guard, it allowed Santangelo to move to the off guard and better utilize his shooting abilities…second on the team in scoring with 16.2 ppg to rank 6th in the West Coast Conference, hitting double digits 28 times including nine 20-plus games…scored career-high 34 points in 88-82 loss at Washington, going 10-19 from the field, 4-4 from 3-point range and 10-10 from the line, the eighth player in Gonzaga history to go at least 10-10 from the free throw line (Frank Burgess and Geoff Goss hold the single-game record at 15-15)…twice hit five 3-pointers in a game- 5-7 against Clemson (as part of a 7-13 night from the field) and 5-8 at Santa Clara (as part of an 8-14 game)…74 3-pointers second on team to Richie Frahm's 77, his 171 3-point attempts two shy of Frahm for the team lead, and his 2.2 3-pointers/game fourth in the WCC…his 3-point buzzer-beater in overtime gave Gonzaga a 79-78 win over Loyola Marymount in the first round of the WCC Tournament, driving the length of the court off the inbound pass and putting up the game winner…in the WCC Tournament averaged 19.3 ppg, 6.0 assists and went 9-21 from 3-point range for 42.9 percent…named to the All-WCC first team and to the All-WCC Tournament team…MVP of the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, AK, to open the season, Gonzaga beating Tulsa, Mississippi State and then 5th-ranked Clemson on the way to the title…went 7-13 from the field, including 5-7 from 3-point range, against Clemson…finished the tournament 16-33 from the field, 7-12 from 3-point range and dished out 14 assists…scored 12 points at Wyoming in the opening round of the NIT, goinng 3-1 from the field, 1-7 from 3-point range and 5-6 from the line…went 3-3 from the line in the final 1:54 to help Gonzaga clinch the win…in second round at Hawai'i scored 9 points, going 4-15 from the field and 1-6 from 3-point range…did not get to the free throw line for just the fourth time in 34 games…had 6 assists.

JUNIOR (1998-99): Teamed with senior Quentin Hall to give Gonzaga one of the best backcourt combinations on the West Coast if not in collegiate basketball…averaged 12.7 ppg, 5.3 assists and 3.3 rpg as Gonzaga won West Coast Conference regular-season and WCC Tournament titles, and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament with wins over Minnesota, Stanford and Florida prior to losing in the West Region title game to eventual NCAA champion Connecticut…matched his career high with 34 points in WCC title-game rout of Santa Clara, going 12-for-18 from the field, 8-11 from 3-point range and 2-2 from the line in earning WCC Tournament MVP honors in 91-66 win…the 8 3-pointers equaled the school record…in the NCAA Tournament scored 14 points and had 8 assists in 1st Round win over Minnesota; had 22 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists in 2nd Round upset of Stanford and 11 points and 7 assists in win over Florida which sent Gonzaga to the Elite Eight…was held to 2 points and 2 assists in NCAA West Region title-game loss to eventual NCAA champion Connecticut…had 22 double-digit games, including 24 in season opener at 8th-ranked Kansas, 13 in first-round Chase NIT win at Memphis and 16 in second-round Chase NIT loss at 15th-ranked Purdue…his 3-point buzzer beater at Texas-Pan American gave Gonzaga a 74-73 come-from-behind victory…with 1,349 career points moved past John Stockton and into 9th place on Gonzaga's career list, and his 443 career assists are second behind Stockton's 554…had 6 or more assists 16 times, including 10 at San Francisco to match his career high…earned All-WCC honors for the second straight season.

Misc.: Born 9-8-77…selected to the 1999 USA Basketball World University Games team, competing in Spain from July 3-12…USA won gold medal…also named to the 1999-2000 Playboy Magazine pre-season All-America team.
